An established automation and engineering solutions provider is looking for a skilled Controls & Electrical Design Engineer to join their team. This is a hands-on, technically focused role, supporting the design, development, and commissioning of bespoke automation, special purpose machinery, conveyors, and materials handling systems.
You will spend the majority of your time working on PLC programming, with additional electrical control panel design, working closely with the mechanical team, software team, and site engineers to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant automation systems.
Controls & Electrical Design Engineer - The Role:
- Design, develop, and commission electrical control systems for bespoke automation and materials handling equipment.
- Develop, test, and deploy PLC and HMI software for small to large-scale automation systems using Siemens TIA Portal (~70–80% of the role).
- Produce compliant electrical designs and control panel layouts using EPLAN.
- Develop safe, reliable control systems, including SISTEMA safety reports where required.
- Apply knowledge of AC/DC motor control, variable speed drives, industrial networking, and Auto-ID systems.
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers to ensure electrical/mechanical integration.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation and assist with on-site commissioning and support as needed.
Controls & Electrical Design Engineer - The Person:#
- Degree, HNC, HND, or equivalent in Electrical, Electronic, or Control Engineering.
- 3–5+ years’ experience in PLC-focused automation and electrical control engineering.
- Strong experience with PLC, HMI, and industrial control systems; Siemens TIA Portal essential.
- Proven experience producing electrical schematics and panel designs using EPLAN.
- Experience generating SISTEMA safety reports.
- Understanding of mechanical interfaces within automation systems.
- Experience with materials handling equipment or special purpose machinery highly desirable.
- Robot programming beneficial but not essential.

Located in Staffordshire, this role would be commutable from Lichfield, Coleshill, Tamworth, Birmingham, Coventry, Walsall, Redditch, Atherstone, and surrounding areas.
