A specialist engineering consultancy delivering bespoke subsea and marine equipment is looking to recruit a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing team.
This is a key hire into a small, highly experienced group of engineers with strong roots in the North East subsea sector. The business was founded by engineers with a passion for keeping high-quality engineering in the region.
With a rapidly growing order book and projects moving quickly from concept to delivery, this role offers the opportunity to take real ownership of complex, one-off mechanical systems.
Lead Mechanical Design Engineer - The Role:
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take a leading role in the full lifecycle design of bespoke subsea equipment, working from initial concept through to manufacture, test, and deployment.
- Leading concept and detailed design of complex mechanical systems
- Performing hand calculations and stress analysis
- Taking ownership of full project delivery, not just isolated design packages
- Supporting manufacture, assembly, and factory acceptance testing (FAT)
- Producing and reviewing technical documentation
- Acting as a technical point of contact for clients
- Mentoring and supporting junior engineers within the team
- Conducting peer reviews and contributing to engineering standards
Lead Mechanical Design Engineer - The Person:
This role would suit an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking to step into — or already operating at — a senior/lead level within a small, high-performing engineering team.
- ~5+ years’ experience in mechanical design within subsea, marine, or oil & gas
- Proven experience delivering full lifecycle projects (concept → manufacture)
- Strong capability in hand calculations and stress analysis
- Experience designing fabricated structures and mechanical systems
- Background in companies such as subsea OEMs or specialist engineering firms
- CAD experience (Inventor ideal, SolidWorks also suitable)
- Strong communication skills and ability to work closely within a small team
- A proactive, hands-on approach with a willingness to take ownership
An excellent opportunity to work on genuinely bespoke, complex equipment as part of a team who are passionate about what they do within a relaxed and friendly environment.
Located in Tyne & Wear, this role would be commutable from Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, Durham, Gateshead, Jarrow, Hebburn, Washington, Chester-le-Street, Blyth, Cramlington, Seaham North Shields, South Shields, Morpeth, Peterlee and surrounding areas.
